…better and better!
The 1954/55 season of the GDR Oberliga is now available in the Transfermarkt database. For the second time in a row, Turbine Erfurt, the predecessor club of today’s Rot-Weiß Erfurt, became champions and had by far the best defense with only 25 goals conceded. Behind them were SC Wismut Karl-Marx-Stadt, now Erzgebirge Aue, as runners-up, led by top scorer Willy Tröger, who scored 22 goals, and in third place, surprisingly, last year’s promoted SC Rotation Leipzig (now 1. FC Lok Leipzig).
The promoted teams, last year’s cup winners Vorwärts Berlin (now 1. FC Frankfurt Oder) and Chemie Karl-Marx-Stadt (now Chemnitzer FC), confidently held the class in eighth and tenth place, while last year’s second promoted team next to SC Rotation, BSG Progress Meerane (today Meeraner SV), finished last. SC Chemie Halle (today Hallescher FC) also had to face the bitter journey in League 2.
The SG Dynamo Dresden team also made headlines, as it was completely delegated to Berlin in order to set up a team there under the name SC Dynamo Berlin. The club was then moved to the 2nd league, where they were relegated again due to a lack of staff.
During the season it was also decided that a team from the north of the GDR should take part in the game. Since too many clubs came from Saxony, the association decided to send the players from BSG Empor Lauter from the Ore Mountains to Rostock alongside coach Oswald Pfau to play for the newly founded SC Empor Rostock (now Hansa Rostock). BSG Empor Lauter was deregistered from the game after the 8th matchday, points and goals were transferred to SC Empor Rostock, which was seamlessly integrated into the action. BSG Empor Lauter in turn became BSG Motor Lauter, started in the lowest league and was never able to build on its success.
SC Wismut Karl-Marx-Stadt wins FDGB Cup
In the FDGB Cup, SC Wismut Karl-Marx-Stadt triumphed for the first and only time after beating Empor Rostock (3:2 nV). Defending champion Vorwärts Berlin was eliminated in the quarter-finals against Erfurt.
