New holiday scheme in Wallonia: “Few students went on holiday early” | Education

Although the school year in Wallonia lasts for the first time this year for the first time and ends on July 7, few students left early for their summer holidays. Authorized Minister of Education Caroline Désir (PS) confirms this today.

Since this school year, the French community has different holiday periods than the rest of the country. As a result, the school year for French-speaking students will last until July 7 this year. Yet few students have already started their holiday early, says French-speaking education minister Désir. “Pupils are still en masse at school”, the PS minister replied today in the parliament of the French community to a question from Marie-Martine Schyns (Les Engagés).

Critics of the changed holiday rule feared that many parents would not respect the extension of the school year and would leave early on holiday, for example to take advantage of cheaper plane tickets.

According to Minister Désir, “there is no mass absenteeism, at least no more than before the timetable reform”. More precise figures on possible absences during the first week of July will not be available until October.

To reduce the risk of early departures, the government had announced additional administrative controls on attendances.
