A real sports and exercise campus on the Meerdijk in Emmen, which also includes the new FC Emmen stadium? It should become clear by the end of the year whether this is feasible.
At the beginning of this year, the foundation was established that is investigating the feasibility of this on behalf of the municipality of Emmen, the province of Drenthe and FC Emmen. Roelie Lubbers from Aalden, together with Jan Rein Koopman, is the initiator of the research.
Since the Emmer football club cashed in on its return to the Eredivisie a few weeks ago, the discussion has flared up left and right: is it really time for a new stadium? The current accommodation, De Oude Meerdijk, dates from 1977 and is outdated. In short, time for new impetus, and with that perhaps a new stadium.
Koopman and Lubbers must provide clarity at the end of the year. The name of their foundation, Sports and Exercise Campus, makes it clear that the search is broadening.
In 2018, the Drenthe College and the Carmel College launched plans for a top sports hall at the FC Emmen stadium. Both schools have programs for up-and-coming sports talents. In addition, the Carmel College indicated last year that it was conducting research into moving to Sports and Business Park Meerdijk.
