The world-famous Checkpoint Charlie is finally getting a facelift!
The realization competition for the 2200 square meter brownfield site on the eastern site (between Zimmerstrasse and Schützenstrasse) has ended.
The redesign for the planned educational and memorial site at the former border crossing on Friedrichstrasse is finally picking up speed. The winner is the architects Schneider & Schumacher.
The rating of Jury member, Senate Building Director Petra Kahlfeld: The design for the eastern property follows the guidelines in a successful way and creates enough space. The relationship across Friedrichstraße to the western property is also impressive. Above all, these qualities were recognized in the partially closed variant.
There is also movement in the planned development for the west side. The revised facade of the planned office building by Meixner Schlueter Wendt Planungs GmbH was shown here. The further development of the project is still being discussed.
The redesign of the checkpoint has been the subject of debate for 30 years. After many investors’ dreams were shattered, the Senate acquired two plots of land and launched a competition.
