New elections decided – world boxing association fights for IOC recognition

IOC sports director Kit McConnell describes the frustration of the executive with “enough is enough”. “The concerns are always in the same areas: governance, refereeing and finance. It’s not the first time we’ve talked about these things, virtually or in person. It’s always the same discussion.”

Therefore, the IOC executive decided to withdraw the responsibility for qualification and Olympic competitions at the 2024 Summer Games in Paris from the world boxing association. The IBA had already been excluded from organizing the boxing tournament last year in Tokyo. Whether boxing will remain part of the Olympic program in Los Angeles in 2028 will be decided later.

It is not currently planned, says sports director McConnell: “Boxing is not part of the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic program. The executive will evaluate all reform efforts with regard to LA.”

IBA holds second extraordinary congress

The world boxing association is currently struggling to get rid of the scandalous circumstances of the presidential elections in May. The Dutchman Boris van der Vorst was not admitted as a presidential candidate because of a premature start to the campaign. The International Sports Court lifted the exclusion in June. There should have been only one warning for the offense. The re-elected incumbent Umar Kremlev from Russia also committed the same violation. The IBA is now drawing consequences from the CAS decision.

“The IBA Executive Board votes to hold a second Extraordinary Congress this year for the national federations to decide on the need for a new presidential election,” read a press release.

The congress is scheduled to take place between September 24th and October 1st. On the agenda are the motion to hold a new presidential election and the election itself. Then with van der Vorst.
