The story of the exceptional German composer Hans Zimmer is honored in a new documentary film: “Hans Zimmer: Hollywood Rebel” illuminates the 40-year career of the film composer, which made him an Oscar-winning Hollywood star.
Over the course of his career, Zimmer has composed scores for films such as The Lion King, Pirates of the Caribbean, Gladiator, The Dark Knight, Batman Begins and Dune. In addition to his work in Hollywood, the documentary also focuses on projects he initiated for the British broadcasting service BBC, including “Planet Earth II”, “Blue Planet II” and “Frozen Planet II”. The documentation is completed by interviews with the directors Ron Howard, Denis Villeneuve, Christopher Nolan, Jeffrey Katzenberg, Barry Levinson, James L Brooks, Gore Verbinski, Steve McQueen, Stephen Frears and Tim Bevan.

Zimmer is very excited to share these deep insights from his life with the world. He said: “I’m honored to be able to share my career and life with BBC audiences. Francis Hanly, the director of the documentary, is also aware of Zimmer’s talent and passion – he speaks of a “dream job”: “The sheer number of outstanding films that Hans Zimmer has scored over the last 40 years is incredible. It was a dream job filming him in his studio at the keyboard as he gave us an intimate and exclusive demonstration of the techniques and sounds he created and the ideas behind some of his most iconic film scores.”
Hans Zimmer is going on a European tour in 2023
Hans Zimmer: Hollywood Rebel will initially only be shown on the BBC. The documentary will be broadcast on BBC Two on Sunday 16 October at 10pm. Zimmer is also returning to his homeland next year: in June he announced a European tour that will include eight concerts in Germany. Zimmer will perform many of his works on this trip together with his band and the Odessa Opera Orchestra & Friends.
