The Buurtmobi has been racing through the Hilversum district of Kerkelanden for 5 years. This takes the elderly residents of the neighborhood from here to here. They recently introduced a new ‘tour bus’, with which they can now take residents further than Kerkelanden. But the Buurtmobi is still crying out for volunteers, which is why NH Helpt is lending a helping hand.
Two vans are currently driving around the neighborhood to transport the less mobile residents of Kerkenlanden. Consider a free lift to the hairdresser or the shopping centre. The idea came from Monique Gijsman. “I once saw it on TV. This allows us to help the elderly escape their isolation.”
The fleet of two vans now also includes the larger ‘neighborhood mobi on tour.’ This larger van can take the elderly across the district border, for example to Sound & Vision or for other fun rides. “We can now go into Hilversum much more.”
Volunteer shortage
But a growing fleet also requires a group of volunteers and there is a dire shortage of them. “We are short of drivers for those extra days that we can drive, because it is getting busier,” Monique outlines. In addition to drivers, the organization is also looking for telephone operators.
