New coach for Espanyol Barcelona: Martínez succeeds Moreno

Instead of Cannavaro

Diego Martínez takes over the vacant coaching post at Espanyol Barcelona. At LaLiga-14. the former Granada coach follows Vicente Moreno, who was released a few weeks ago in the Catalan metropolis. For a while there had been speculation about Italian football icon Fabio Cannavaro as the successor to the Blanquiazules bench. Instead, Martínez now received a contract with the RCDE for the next two seasons.

Espanyol had announced an extensive “restructuring of the sports area” in mid-May and not only parted ways with promotion coach Moreno with immediate effect, but also waived a contract extension with sports director Francisco Rufete, for whom Domingo Catoira initially took over and who was also responsible for finding a coach. Martínez took his first steps in the coaching business with the youth team at FC Sevilla and also looked after Osasuna in the 2nd division. At Granada, which had led Martínez to sixth place in the House of Lords, he retired after last season after three years in office.
