New coach: FC Sevilla tries to turn things around with ex-coach Jorge Sampaoli

Crashed in LaLiga

FC Sevilla presented a successor shortly after the separation from coach Julen Lopetegui. Ex-coach Jorge Sampaoli, who has been without a club since leaving Olympique Marseille at the end of last season, is set to lead the team until at least 2024.

Sampaoli first appeared in Nervión in 2016, when he followed Unai Emery, who had been recruited from PSG at the time. Sevilla then released the Argentine in 2017 for a move to his country’s national team. At his last stop in Marseille, Sampaoli led the team to runners-up and the Conference League semi-finals in 2022, but due to the short appearances at his last clubs, he is considered a risky decision by sports director Monchi.

Under Lopetegui, the Blanquirrojos have finished third and two fourths in LaLiga in recent seasons, but have fallen to the bottom of the table over the course of the season so far in the Spanish top flight. With only one win, the club is currently in 17th place. A 1: 4 in the Champions League against BVB on Wednesday provided the final reason for the separation. Sampaoli will lead his first training session at the old club on Thursday night.
