New charges against Kremlin critic Navalny: “I am a criminal genius” | Abroad

Incarcerated Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny faces additional prison sentences. Russian justice has brought new charges against him, the 46-year-old himself said on social media.

According to Navalny, authorities charge him “promoting terrorism”, “inciting extremism”, “financing extremist activities” and “rehabilitating Nazism”. “The lawyers have calculated that all this carries a prison sentence of thirty years,” said the opponent.

“I’m a criminal genius,” Navalny said jokingly on social media. “You all thought I had been in isolation in prison for two years, but actually I was actively committing crimes.”

Navalny is currently serving a 9-year prison sentence for fraud, following a trial labeled politically motivated by the West. On January 17, 2021, Navalny was arrested in Moscow when he returned from Germany, where he was recovering from a poison attack that he barely survived. The opposition leader was paroled after controversial convictions in an old corruption case. But according to justice, he violated the conditions for his release with the trip to Germany.
