It is perhaps a matter of opinion whether it is good or bad that a new James Bond has still not been found. However, it has been clear for some time that Daniel Craig will hang up his spy suit. The rumor mill is churning about who could succeed him as 007. The name Idris Elba came up again and again. Also because it would be the first POC bond.
But now, according to producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson, there’s a criterion that the “Luther” star wouldn’t meet. Dem “Independent” the two said that the secret agent would be a man again. But it also has to be significantly different from previous bonds.
The new actor should be obliged to carry the license to kill (or perhaps more modernly: to overwhelm) with dignity for at least ten years. This means: The new Bond will be an actor who is in his 30s. Elba is already 52.
Daniel Craig started at the age of 38, while Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton and Pierce Brosnan were all in their early to mid-40s when they first received a secret assignment from Q. So this time the Broccolis seem to prefer someone younger.
Will Aaron Taylor-Johnson be the next James Bond?
It is clear that a person of color is not excluded. On the contrary, it could even be the first choice to literally give the action series a new face. Most recently, “Superman” star Henry Cavill and Aaron Taylor-Johnson were also brought into play. The latter had already completed screen tests in 2022. According to the Sun, he was subsequently credited with having a “perfect mix of talent and action experience,” making him one of the promising candidates.
Even if the new Bond is found quite soon, it will still be a while before we see him in action. “No Time To Die”, the last film in the agent series, was released in 2021. The successor is unlikely to be released in cinemas until 2026 at the earliest. This fact alone makes film history: there has never been such a big gap between two Bond films since the 1960s.
