New campaign to convince people to buy local fish

People do have the North Sea fishermen in their hearts, but when it comes to buying local fish, we can go a step further, it appears. “The Japanese, Spaniards and especially the Italians can easily double our consumption of fish,” says Maarten Du Bois of the VISGRO trade association.

“People don’t know what local fish is”

At the Vismarkt in the heart of Bruges, locals and (inter)national tourists learn how to prepare local fish. And that is necessary, according to Stephan Batsleer of the Lobster Pot restaurant in Bruges: “I think that people do not always know what local fish is. That is why we, as fish ambassadors, have to keep knocking on that nail to ask people to buy local.”

On 1 October, ‘Van Visser tot Vork’ will be a major closing event at the old fishing port of Zeebrugge. There you can taste the approximately 50 local fish species that come ashore with us.
