In 2004 he published his last book, Chronicles: Volume One. In 2017 he became the first pop musician to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature. The album “Rough And Rowdy Ways” was released last year. Now his New York publisher Simon & Schuster has announced that Bob Dylan is back among the writers.

On November 8, 2022, 60 essays are to be published under the title “The Philosophy of Modern Song”, in which Dylan will deal with the works of colleagues such as Elvis Costello, Nina Simone, Hank Williams or the traditional songwriter Stephen Foster (“Oh , Susanna, Swanee River).

According to his publisher’s press release, it’s supposed to be a kind of advanced seminar on the art of songwriting. “Among other things, the singer-songwriter analyzes what he calls the pitfalls of simple rhymes. He explains how adding a single syllable can degrade a song or how bluegrass relates to heavy metal,” says Simon & Schuster.

“A book like ‘The Philosophy of Modern Song’ could only have been written by Bob Dylan. His voice is unique, and his work conveys his deep appreciation and understanding of songs, the people who bring those songs to life, and what songs mean to all of us.”

The work is furnished with around 150 photos from the master’s private collection. In addition, there is a selection of “dreamy riffs”, which, when put together, result in an overall epic. The Philosophy will also be available as an audio book, with Dylan narrating a chorus of guest voices. In Germany it is to be published by CH Beck at the same time.

The 80-year-old recently announced that he wants to continue his “Never Ending Tour” at least until 2024. Dylan had ceded the publishing and publication rights to his own songs in a spectacular double deal, first with Sony Music and then with Universal Music in January. Industry experts have valued the Sony deal alone at $200 million.
