New Beernem swimming pool is taking shape

The swimming pool and cellar are currently being built. It will be a 25 meter pool with eight lanes. There will also be an instruction pool with a movable floor and a paddling pool. Beernem pays for everything himself.

“We first looked at surrounding municipalities whether co-financing was possible, but no municipality is joining us. That is why we are doing it ourselves. And we have a good reason for that. All schools come to swim here”, says Mayor Jos Sypré.

The new swimming pool is equipped with all sustainable techniques for heating and energy, and an underground cellar is full. The cost for all this is 9.5 million euros. Many municipalities are forced to put their large investments on hold in anticipation of better times, but for Beernem the new swimming pool is a priority.

“In the first place, we want to serve the previous users of the former Bloemendale swimming pool. That was 100,000 visitors a year,” explains Patricia Waerniers, alderman for finance and sports. According to Waerniers, the edition is portable for Beernem. In addition, everything has been thoroughly tested.

In the autumn of 2023, the residents of Beernem will be able to discover the swimming pool for the first time.
