The black and yellow were reportedly interested in the Algerian before last summer’s transfer window, while rumors arose that the post on the left back would become vacant because of an alleged farewell to Raphaël Guerreiro (27). Neither the new signing nor the departure came about, and anyway, instead of Bensebaini, BVB decided in favor of David Raum (24), who then did not come because the money was needed at short notice to replace Sébastien Haller (28) as a striker. Raum went to Leipzig, Guerreiro stayed in Dortmund and Bensebaini with the “foals”. Now the interest in the national player has been renewed, and the starting position has changed at most in terms of contract lengths.

With the current injury-related absence of Guerreiro, the left-back position at BVB has already been weakened for the time being, but there is still a lack of a strong foundation in the long term. The Portuguese’s contract, who would probably like to extend it in Dortmund, expires at the end of the season because Borussia is apparently not yet convinced. Change could already come in winter, because the Mönchengladbachers also have to look at the financial side with a view to Bensebaini, who is also free in the summer.
The “domino effect” that Gladbach’s sports director Roland Virkus had hoped for after the contract extensions of several top performers was not achieved by Bensebaini. Instead, the number of rumors about the Algerian increased. Now it is up to VfL to weigh up “between what a player can still give you for six months and what he brings you financially,” Virkus told the German Press Agency a few days ago.

The Gladbach manager made it clear that a new working paper for Bensebaini is of course difficult: “There are certain financial limits in this club,” said Virkus. “In addition, I cannot guarantee any player here to play internationally every year.” An offer to the player would exist.
