The 20-year-old suspect was arrested last Tuesday. He is suspected of ‘taking preparatory actions to cause an explosion or to set a fire in association, with a terrorist motive’.

Two minor suspects were previously arrested. They were 14 and 17 years old at the time they were arrested. The duo was stopped near the building on the night of Thursday, March 22 to Friday, March 23 around 1:15 am. Less than a week later, two men (18 and 23 years old) were arrested for involvement.

Heavy fireworks

During the investigation into the two Amsterdam teenagers, heavy fireworks were found in the area. The police and the Public Prosecution Service believe that they wanted to cause an explosion or fire with these materials.

The synagogue on Adriaan Pauwlaan was already under extra surveillance by the police after several incidents at Jewish institutions in Amsterdam and Rotterdam.

Suspect in restraints

The 20-year-old man was brought before the examining magistrate in Amsterdam on Friday. It was then decided that he should remain in custody for another fourteen days. The suspect is under restrictions, which means that he is only allowed to have contact with his lawyer.
