New Amsterdam home must be evacuated due to drug lab and cannabis farm

A house on the Scheidingsweg in New Amsterdam must be evacuated by order of the judge. In June, a drug lab and a cannabis farm were discovered in that building. The housing association wanted to get rid of the tenant and therefore successfully went to court.

After the discovery of drug production in the sheds near the building, the 54-year-old resident was arrested. He may face criminal charges.

Mayor Eric van Oosterhout decided not to close the house, which is often the next step. This had to do with two minor children aged 16 and 17 who live there.

These children would end up on the street with their own psychological problems. It remained a conditional closure of three months.

The judge recently decided that the parties had to substantiate whether the children would end up in an acute emergency in the event of an eviction. This has not been proven, the judge now rules.

The children have been staying with an acquaintance of the 54-year-old resident for some time, because the rented building has been disconnected from electricity for some time. They can stay there even after the eviction. In addition, there are other care options for these teenagers, such as crisis care through OGGZ or De Access in Emmen.

The home must be vacated within two weeks.
