Ryan Eggold returns as Dr. Max Goodwin in New Amsterdam 5. THE new episodes of the last season – broadcast from tonight at 21.45 on Canale 5 and in stream on Mediaset Infinity – mark the end of a five-year adventure. It was 2018 when the series debuted in the United States and later in Italy. Set in one of New York’s oldest public hospitalshe said the other side of the US healthcare coin. Not only, therefore, sentimental relationships between doctors and patient stories, but also the more bureaucratic and less romantic aspects of medical dramas.

The fifth and final season picks up where it left off the previous one. New Amsterdam has experienced quite a few upheavals in the last year, starting with return of Dr. Goodwin as head of the hospital. Reintegration at the helm of the structure is not simple. Max, in fact, has to solve some personal problems, which have gone through the entire fourth season. Between these, relationship with Helen Sharpe (Freema Agyeman). After the breakup one step away from the weddingthe doctor finds comfort in work and the support of friends and colleagues.
Also, the team that supports him is no longer as enthusiastic and optimistic as they once were. It will be up to him to take back the reins and instill positivity in his colleagues. All while trying to balance work and private life. In particular, he will have to understand how to create and manage bonds with loved ones.
Many knots to cliffs also for the other characters. Dr. Lauren Bloom (Janet Montgomery), for example, will have to face her relationship with her sister Vanessa, with which there is no good dialogue. Doctor Iggy Frome (Tyler Labine), on the other hand, faces the problems of her marriage to Martin (Mike Doyle).
Also for Floyd Reynolds (Jocko Sims) comes the moment of reckoning. He will be focused on analyzing the relationship with his father Horace, who disappeared years earlier. Finally, space also for the latest arrival, Elizabeth Wilder (Sandra Mae Frank). She’s only been on Goodwin’s team for a year and aims to become indispensable for New Amsterdambut it also proves to be a point of reference for several colleagues.
What happens in the first episode: Max and Helen, a love ended?
The first of the 13 episodes that make up the season opens with Max grappling with the memory of Helen. Think back to some specific moments and try to understand what went wrong, but especially if he ignored some signs. Bloom hosts Dr. Leyla Shinwari (Shiva Kalaiselvan) at her home. In the meantime, she treats some sex workers who have been attacked and injured.
Frome and Martin arrange shifts for child care. Elizabeth Wilder wants to fulfill a patient’s last wisha terminally ill boy: participate in a Bollywood film. Karen Brantley (Debra Monk) informs Goodwin that the hospital has received a major donation from a company not exactly in line with the ideals that according to Max the New Amsterdam should pursue.

“I don’t want to fix the system. I want to build something better.” That’s Max Goodwi’s mantran, a charismatic doctor, prepared and devoted to the profession. He maybe sometimes too dreamy and therefore destined to collide with harsh reality. Despite the obstacles, he doesn’t give up and, if it can’t change things fundamentally, it gets around them by inventing a useful alternative.
Furthermore, for him New Amsterdam is not a workplace like any other. As a child, in fact, he was hospitalized together with his sister Luna, who died following an infection contracted right inside the structure. Unfortunately for the fans, at the end of the fifth season, Dr. Goodwin will leave the public forever who has loved him since the first episodes. “I can’t believe it’s been five seasons already and this is the last,” the actor said.

David Schulner, creator of the series, explained that the fifth season “will end where it all began”. Therefore each story will end with no loose ends or open endings. “I think it’s important to go back to the energy of the first season. All the stories that thrilled viewers will find a worthy conclusion.
As already happened for the previous chapters, too New Amsterdam 5 will tell stories inspired by realitytaken from the stories of Bellevue Hospital in New York, enclosed in Twelve Patients: Life and Death at Bellevue Hospitalwritten by former medical director Eric Manheimer, now author of the series.
Speaking of reality, once again fiction intertwines with current events. After reporting on the pandemic, the series now deals with the issue of abortion.
