The days of Ed Sheeran’s math albums are almost over! The singer announced on Wednesday (March 1st) that the final work in his series of logically rational titles will be called Subtract. According to him, it will be very personal: Sheeran is ready to open the “trapdoor to his soul” for the listeners. The record will be released on May 5, 2023.

Sheeran revealed that he’s been working on the recording for a decade with the aim of producing the perfect acoustic album. The year 2022 was so drastic due to his wife’s tumor disease and the “sudden” death of his best friend Jamal that it permanently changed his mental health and musical vision and changed the artistic basis.

The singer is making a woman’s illness public for the first time: Cherry Seaborn was only allowed to have the operation after the birth of their second child.

In a diary entry that has now been published, the singer says: “Music is my therapy. It helps me understand my feelings. i have the songs [damals] written without knowing what they will be […]. In just over a week, I was able to replace a decade of work with my deepest, darkest thoughts.”

Thus, the album should clearly stand out from his previous records. His new music is much darker and more honest – and no longer created to please others. The singer has already released the tracklist for “Subtract”:

  1. “boat”
  2. “Saltwater”
  3. “Eyes Closed”
  4. “Life Goes On”
  5. dusty
  6. “End of Youth”
  7. color blind
  8. curtains
  9. “Borderline”
  10. “spark”
  11. “vegas”
  12. “Sycamore”
  13. “No Strings”
  14. “The Hills of Aberfeldy”

The album is co-written and co-produced by The National’s Aaron Dessner, who was introduced to Ed Sheeran by Taylor Swift. Together, Dessner and Sheeran have produced 30 songs, 14 of which will be featured on Subtract.
