The late rock musician Frank Zappa is honored with a new album. Zappa ’75: Zagreb/Ljubljana is scheduled for release on October 14th and will feature previously unreleased music. Preorders are here possible.
The new work presents Frank Zappa live in the former Yugoslavia in 1975 with a rare line-up of the Mothers. It contains 27 live tracks, exclusive concert recordings and unreleased songs and will be released both digitally and on two CDs. Zappa ’75: Zagreb/Ljubljana was posthumously produced by Zappa’s son Ahmet Zappa and drummer Joe Travers.
Zappa’s first time in Zagreb and Ljubljana
After Zappa produced the album “One Size Fits All” in autumn 1975, he and his band The Mothers played concerts in Zagreb and Ljubljana, the former Yugoslavia, for the first time. He called the concert series, which took place on November 21 and 22, 1975, “Mothers of Invention Yugoslavian Extravaganza”. At the shows he was joined by Andre Lewis (keyboards), Napoleon Murphy Brock (tenor sax and vocals), Norma Bell (alto sax, vocals), Roy Estrada (bass) and Terry Bozzio (drums).
What happened behind the scenes during this time was recorded, among other things, in the announced booklet. In addition to photos from the time of Gail Zappa and John Rudiak, the catalog also includes notes by Joe Travers, an interview with Zappa and sound engineer Davy Moire, who recorded the show and worked with Zappa from 1975-1978, and a report and illustration by his drummer Bozzio.
Zappa/Erie box set
Most recently, in June of this year, the box set entitled “Zappa/Erie”, which was also published posthumously, was released. The collection includes songs from three Zappa performances that took place in and around his hometown of Erie, Pennsylvania – Edinboro College ’74, Gannon University ’74, and Erie County Fieldhouse ’76. All songs including bonus tracks have been remastered. The set is also supplemented by historical essays by Dan Schell and Joe Travers.
