New 12 teams: An overview of the changes in the Swiss Super League

Before the start of the season

The Swiss Super League starts a new era on July 22nd. The league will feature 12 teams, two more than in the past 20 years. The increase was actually undisputed. But there were always heated discussions about the mode. A playoff system was being considered until last November, but this was sunk again by the clubs after heavy fan protests. The magic word for the coming years is now “Scottish mode”.

“Scots mode” in Switzerland: almost 50 more games

The mode of the Scottish Premiership is copied. This means that the twelve teams first play each other three times, which makes 33 games. After that, the league is divided into the Championship Group and the Relegation Group, each of which has six teams. The points from the previous 33 rounds are carried over. Each team plays one game against the other group opponents. That makes five more games per team and a total of 38 matches. A total of 230 games will be played instead of 182. Due to the increased number of games, the winter break will also be shortened.

Super League: Vaud trio new

In order to ensure the increase, three teams were promoted last season. Challenge League winners Yverdon Sport and second-placed Lausanne-Sport managed promotion directly. The third-placed Stade Lausanne-Ouchy had to go through the “Barrage” (relegation playoff) and clearly defeated FC Sion in two games. All three newcomers come from the canton of Vaud.

Calibrated lines new, but without 3D representation

So that decisions can be made faster and it can be explained to the viewer more clearly, the Super League now also implements the calibrated line for offside decisions. For financial reasons, however, a 3D display was not used.

Extended transfer window in Switzerland

Off the field, too, he makes changes. The clubs in the Swiss Football League and the first division now have until September 7th to transfer players. The changes were introduced so that clubs still have the opportunity to compensate for any late departures abroad. The winter transfer window opens as usual on January 15th and closes on February 15th. Transfers of U21 players trained in Switzerland are still possible until March 31.

New ownership

Various Swiss clubs have been taken over by foreign investors in recent years. A total of five clubs will start in the Super League, whose owners come from abroad. New is Yverdon-Sport, which announced the American Jeffrey Saunders as the majority shareholder a month ago. Lausanne-Sport (INEOS), FC Lugano (Joe Mansueto), Grasshoppers (Fosun Group) and Stade Lausanne-Ouchy (Vartan Sirmakes) also belong to this group.
