“Nevermind” would no longer trigger a revolution today

What was popular in 1991 may no longer be so today. Would Nirvana’s hit album “Nevermind” still cause as much hype as it did back then? In fact, Butch Vig doesn’t believe Kurt Cobain’s songs would explode today like they did in the early ’90s. Billie Eilish would be the one to fit the zeitgeist right now, according to the Garbage drummer and Nevermind producer.

Nirvana no longer correspond to the zeitgeist

In an interview with theNMEhe was carried away to the statement some time ago that Nirvana would no longer have it so easy: “I think it would be difficult to repeat the zeitgeist moment.” record is – if ‘Nevermind’ came out this week it wouldn’t have the same cultural impact.”

But he doesn’t want to put down the US grunge band with that. He just wanted to make it clear that Nirvana were in the right place at the right time. “It was perfect timing as the music changed and it felt like a revolution. I can see that again today, but not in the same way.”

Billie Eilish is now the voice of the teens

Who meanwhile has taken the place of Nirvana? Clearly Billie Eilish, according to Vig: “Billie speaks for a whole generation of youngsters, much like Nirvana.”

But apart from her, musicians would have a hard time really making it big, largely due to the lack of anything “mystical”.

Butch Vig also has clear ideas here: “Maybe someone will come with a band that sounds like Nirvana, but who is an author who writes like Bob Dylan, likes hip-hop and has neither Instagram nor Facebook. Maybe then the band will do a few shows and disappear. If she did that, people would go crazy because they would want to see her all the more.” And if such a group already exists, the US producer wants to know very badly, because: “I want to produce it!”
