Eindhoven Airport had a record number of travelers last year: 6.8 million. There are even more than before the corona years. The planes have also never been so full before. With the record number of 6.8 million travelers, Eindhoven Airport was very close to the maximum number of flight movements. With the current permit, the airport has permission for a maximum of 41,500 flight movements. In 2023 they had 41,496 takeoffs and landings, so 4 less than the maximum. Furthermore, the average number of passengers per flight was also very high.
Combine that high number of flight movements with aircraft that are always full and you have this passenger record, a spokesperson explains. The number of travelers is even higher than before the corona years. In 2019, the airport welcomed 6.7 million travelers. This was less during the corona years, but now travelers have found the airport again. “It turns out: people just love to travel,” says the spokeswoman.
The total number of destinations at Eindhoven Airport was 84 in 2023. The top 3 destinations with the most passengers were:
- Malaga
- London (Stansted)
- Alicante
The busiest day was September 15 with a total of 24,597 passengers.
Noise disturbance
With that maximum number of flight movements and full aircraft, the number of travelers that Eindhoven Airport can handle per year seems to have been reached. Should a larger permit be issued? “We have not been growing the number of flight movements for years. We will soon also switch to a different way of managing the number of flights. We will no longer look at the maximum number of flight movements per year, but at the amount of noise pollution caused,” the spokeswoman concluded.
From 2028, the airport wants to focus on ‘noise standards instead of the number of flights’, the airport also announced earlier. There had been criticism of the airport for years. Local residents complained about the noise pollution caused by the airport. Last year, Eindhoven Airport also decided to cancel private flights from the airport. “
