Manuel Neuer will not be in the national team squad for the friendly matches against Turkey and Austria, the goalkeeper announced on Tuesday. Nevertheless, he wants to fight for the position of number 1 at the home European Championships.
When national coach Julian Nagelsmann announces his squad for the German national team on Friday, the name Manuel Neuer will not appear in the official presentation. The FC Bayern goalkeeper confirmed this on Tuesday (November 7th) at the press conference before the Champions League game against Galatasaray Istanbul (FC Bayern – Galatasaray Istanbul on Wednesday, November 8th, at 9 p.m. in the radio report).
But Neuer will certainly not go unmentioned even then. His name is too big, his charisma is too bright, he shaped goalkeeping in the club, the DFB and the football world for too long. And so the discussion about who will be in goal at the European Championships in Germany in the summer of 2024 will continue to accompany everyone involved for a long time.

The reason for not being nominated: “The fact is that I’m not traveling to the national team. The reason for this is that I just need the time for myself. Of course, there are medical reasons for that too.” After his comeback after almost a year out due to injury, Neuer has shown good performances in his previous appearances in the FC Bayern jersey. A mistake in the build-up to the game, which resulted in Joshua Kimmich’s red card, was the only weakness.
But Neuer takes time. The goalkeeper reports “two or three aches and pains” that occur after games, but didn’t want to sound too worried. “Normal at our age,” said the 37-year-old and laughed. He will also have informed Nagelsmann about this. “Of course, Julian and I have been in contact for a long time and we also spoke to each other after the Dortmund game,” said Neuer, who would like to rejoin the DFB squad during the international break in March.
Neuer: “I’ll show up to play”
The next opportunity for a DFB appointment would be in March next year. Neuer definitely wants to be there again – and then at the latest the fight for number 1 will really pick up speed. Even if Neuer tried to formulate his demands without unnecessarily heating up the competition with Marc André ter-Stegen: “Everything that comes is a bonus, but I am an ambitious and ambitious guy. I will compete to play. I always wants to be on the pitch,” said Neuer.
After his injury, he admitted for the first time that his career was on a knife’s edge after the serious lower leg injury. “It was a serious injury. I’m glad that I can play football again,” said Neuer. The DFB selection will face Turkey in its final international matches of the year on November 18th in Berlin and Austria three days later in Vienna.
