Oranje debut postponed
With a market value of €40m, Jeremie Frimpong is the most valuable Dutch full-back. And although the 22-year-old plays consistently well at Bayer Leverkusen, he is not an issue in the national team. Frimpong is still waiting for his premiere under Bonds coach Ronald Koeman and because he has not been called up for the upcoming international matches against Greece and Ireland, he has to be patient. However, his absence has no sporting reasons, rather Koeman Frimpong resents his cancellation for the U21 European Championships this summer.
“We’re not happy with players dropping out for Jong Oranje. If you do that and think that you can play in the Dutch national team shortly afterwards, I don’t understand it. It doesn’t work that way,” Koeman said at a press conference on Monday. It is “a player’s duty to appear for any team”. It was therefore decided within the Dutch Football Association (KNVB) not to use Frimpong in September. Koeman emphasized: “You can see it as a kind of punishment.”
From 35 to 66.5 million: The most expensive right-backs in the world
Frimpong was part of the Dutch squad for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, but did not play there because Denzel Dumfries (27) was ahead on the right wing and played through in each of the five games. Since then, Frimpong has not been considered, nor has he played for the U21s. Things were going better for him at club level: in this calendar year alone, his market value rose by 15 million euros, he also ended last season with 20 goals in 48 games across all competitions and started the new season with five scorers in four games.
