Netflix: “Squid Game” starts as a reality show in November

Although the game show is not life-threatening, the production is said to have been “inhumane”.

The Korean Netflix series “Squid Game” celebrated global success two years ago. Now the streaming service is announcing a start date for the reality show of the same name – inspired by the series. From November 22nd, you can watch 456 candidates compete against each other for prize money of 4.5 million US dollars (around 4.25 million euros).

In the original fictional series, heavily indebted people took part in the show in the hope of using the enormous prize money to pay off their debts. But what they didn’t know is that if they fail in the children’s games, they will be killed. So the participants – except for one lucky winner – plunged to their deaths. The all-clear: no one will die in the reality show “Squid Game: The Challenge”.

Nevertheless, the recording is said to have taken place under sometimes questionable conditions, which is why the broadcast caused some controversy in advance. The news portal “Badische Neueste Nachrichten” reports that safety inspections were said to have been necessary during production. The filming of the game “Red Light, Green Light” – already known from the series – took place during a cold snap in Great Britain. Since the candidates were said to have only been dressed in their tracksuits, some became hypothermic and needed urgent medical attention. The entire filming conditions were “inhumane” and “cruel,” anonymous participants told the press.

Developed by British production companies Studio Lambert and The Garden, the show was filmed at Cardington Studios, a former Royal Air Force base in Bedford, England. Netflix currently appears to be considering releasing the reality show’s episodes gradually throughout November rather than all at once. The streaming service has already chosen this method of publication for the dating show “Too Hot To Handle” and the game show “The Circle”.
