Netflix series “Squid Game” gets second season

The Korean series hit “Squid Game” gets a second season. Ted Sarandos, Co-CEO of the streaming provider Netflix, confirmed this in a conference call on Thursday, several US industry journals reported unanimously.

“The universe of Squid Game has only just begun,” Sarandos was quoted as saying by Deadline magazine. Squid Game is Netflix’s biggest hit to date. The thriller series was watched by 142 million households in the first four weeks after its launch last fall.

The success of the format is due to the Korean team, Sarandos said. “They tried to find all the elements of Korean cinema and drama and build them in a way that took the production value to a new level.”

The world has been curious about K-Drama before, but it’s easy accessibility through streaming that has brought mainstream success.

“Squid Game” is a mixture of thriller and social criticism: In a game show, hundreds of highly indebted people from completely different social backgrounds compete against each other in children’s games in order to win millions in prize money. Losers are killed instantly in the macabre competition.

Actor Oh Young-soo won a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of the number one contestant, and the series was also nominated for Best Drama Series and Best Actor in a Drama Series.

“Squid Game” also led to criticism in this country – for example, children played the series in a daycare and after-school care center. After that, the appeal came up that children should not watch the episodes.
