Microsoft will provide Netflix with the technology for advertising with a new subscription. The video service comes in addition to the current options with a cheaper subscription. Viewers who choose to do so will then see advertisements.

Microsoft will help show ads to Netflix viewers. “The partnership also shows that our focus on privacy is valued,” Microsoft CEO wrote Mikhail Parakhin† “It’s built on protecting customer data.”
Netflix director Reed Hastings announced last April that he was working on a cheaper subscription for users. The video service has been struggling with a declining number of subscribers lately, possibly due to strong competition from other streaming services.
Netflix lost 200,000 paying subscribers in the first quarter of this year. The figures for the past quarter will be published shortly. According to CNBC the company has already warned that two million users may have dropped out.
