There is an uphill battle raging among the TV streaming platforms. Ever since Disney+ and other competitors entered the race, the former top dog Netflix has been weakening. In any case, the days of steep subscription growth seem to be over.
A way out of the misery should be the introduction of the format “Netflix Basic”, which should (also) be financed by advertising blocks. Now the Los Gatos, California-based company announced that between 5 and 10 percent of TV shows and films in the US would not be available there due to licensing restrictions.
In other words, some of the most popular formats on the streaming service are blocked for cheap subscriptions.
Netflix Basic: Breaking Bad and The Crown are blocked
The US trade magazine “Variety” listed various series that are not available in the US in the $6.99/month offer: For example “Arrested Development”, “Breaking Bad”, “Grey’s Anatomy”, “How to Get Away with Murder”, “The Crown”, “Cobra Kai” or “House of Cards”.
This lockdown festival could be extended with “Peaky Blinders”, “The Last Kingdom” or “Friday Night Lights”, as can be seen in some comment columns in the Hollywood trade press.
In the budget sector, too, there is often a screen on the screen for films: “Skyfall”, “28 Days” or “The Bad Guys” fall under this embargo strategy, which are marked by a snappy “lock symbol” if they are called.
It is currently unclear how this will affect the launch of the basic version of Netflix in Germany.
