Neil Young with Crazy Horse: “World Record” (Review & Stream)

People who don’t know Neil Young (but who doesn’t know Neil Young? is what men in their fifties are asking now) could mistake “World Record” for sentimental hippie kitsch. And that’s it. But it’s also the most touching hippie kitsch in the world! Uncle Neil wants to save Mother Nature once again. He hasn’t given up hope and sings against the climate crisis and war. For his rusty Americana continuation he got himself a real producer again this time, namely none other than Rick Rubin.

Young has never had time for bullshit and many words

During the studio trip of the two Zausel something magical happens. Rubin teases the old man, lets him record overdubs, sends Young into the singing booth more often than his work routine allows. At times, it even seems as if Rubin had an influence on the songwriting, as when Young in the battered ballad “I Walk With You (Earth Ringtone)” or the naïve and uplifting ode “Walkin’ On The Road (To The Future)” ’ the melody twists one turn further than usual.

“Love Earth” opens the record with a cozy sway and praises the nature of love in a way that blurs the line between banality and philosophy: “Love Earth and your love comes back to you.” Oh, if only it were that easy, the pessimist thinks. And Young replies: “It’s such an easy thing to do/ Love Earth, ’til the water and the air is pure.” Accompanied by the blissful accordion, “This Old Planet (Changing Days)” uses memories of better times for an optimistic one Signal to younger generations, the rabidly rumbling “Break The Chain” evokes the courage to change.

Young has never had time for bullshit and many words. Now he sings a song called “The Wonder Won’t Wait”, pump organ and harmonica blow to the departure. One last time, in the epic “Chevrolet”, he lets the electric guitar howl. It sounds like a retired steel worker steering his Chevy down the Highway of Unfulfilled Dreams.
