Neil Young’s musical development is sometimes reminiscent of the unpredictable course of a pinball. From folk rock to country, hard rock and new wave pop to rockabilly and bar band blues. Above all, as he says, he just wants to write songs that “go straight to people’s souls”. Arte is now dedicating the documentary “Neil Young – Uncompromising Songwriters” to the lonely and yet happy troubadour.
“I’m a musician, not a joker”
Apart from that, Young’s commitment to socio-political issues is particularly noticeable. In the past, for example, he has campaigned for climate protection, farmers in need and civil rights. “I’m a musician, not a joker,” he said.
The documentary “Neil Young – Uncompromising Songwriters” by Thomas Boujout now wants to show hitherto unknown facets of the atypical hero. Among other things, archive recordings from the last fifty years are shown, with interviews and performances on international stages.
“Neil Young – Songwriter without compromise” on April 22, 2022 at 9:45 p.m. on Arte (note: new date, postponed from April 8th)
