Neil Young has announced the fourth release in his “Official Release Series” for the end of April: In addition to three of his albums from the 1980s, the box set will also contain the EP “Eldorado”, which has only been released in Australia and Japan so far.

The box set will be released on April 29th. The 1980 solo album Hawks & Doves begins, accompanied by two works that Young released in collaboration with other artists. The box contains “Re·ac·tor”, the fifth record that the singer produced together with the rock band Crazy Horse. The Synclavier, discovered by its producer David Briggs, was used here for the first time and provided a new, electronic sound.

The album “This Note’s For You” was originally intended to be released under “Neil Young & The Bluenotes” until soul singer Harold Melvin of the soul formation “Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes” took legal action against the use of the name. This is now only remembered by earlier versions of the cover of the record, which deals with the commercialization of rock and roll and concert tours.

The EP “Eldorado” contains three mixes of songs from Young’s seventeenth album “Freedom” and two tracks not otherwise found on any other disc. With the release of the box set, these will also be available outside of Australia and Japan for the first time.

Most recently, Neil Young made headlines with his Spotify boycott: he had his entire music catalog removed from the streaming platform and also called on other artists to do the same. His antipathy to Spotify has not just one, but two hooks: On the one hand, Young criticized Spotify for keeping Joe Rogan’s vaccination-critical podcast in its program, on the other hand, he complained about the poor sound quality on Spotify.
