Several schools in Belgium were closed on Monday as a precaution due to a bomb threat. This concerns 27 schools for primary, special and secondary education in Brussels and Walloon Brabant (Wallonia), reports the affected school umbrella organization Wallonie-Bruxelles Enseignement. It is said to be a bomb threat on Sunday evening, but nothing has yet been announced about the nature of this report.
The school buildings were immediately inspected by the police on Sunday evening and will not open until the inspection is completed. An evaluation will be conducted on Monday to determine whether the schools can reopen on Tuesday. The head of the school umbrella organization said to the Flemish broadcaster VRT that many companies have been “affected by similar warnings” in recent weeks and that the bomb threat is “no reason for panic.”
Last month, an apartment building, a supermarket, several schools and an airport in Belgium were evacuated after threatening emails. These reports have increased since the war between Israel and Hamas in the Middle East, writes VRT. In a press release, the school umbrella organization wrote on Monday: “We can only regret the increase in these types of warnings in recent weeks.”
