Nearly 6,000 homes without power for hours, customers trapped in Jumbo

In Geldrop, almost six thousand households are without power due to a power outage. This is expected to last until a quarter to seven.

“We sit comfortably with a candle and a blanket,” says Liesbeth Smans from Geldrop. She also suddenly turned off the lights at just before five. “They say it won’t be until a quarter to seven, so we’ll just wait and see. Until then, she’ll just listen to the radio on the phone.

Trapped in the Jumbo
The power in the Jumbo at the Coevering is also out. As a result, all the shutters in the supermarket were down and customers were stuck for half an hour. They were eventually led out of the building via the emergency exit.

“Suddenly the lights started flashing,” said Shyamen Bollen, who was doing some shopping. “Then it became completely dark and the shutters were lowered.” Employees rushed to the shelves to cover the food with hoods. “It was a strange sensation.”

Most customers did not find it very exciting: they mainly saw it as the perfect opportunity to be the first in the checkout line. But alas, the basket had to stay there. “We were given a pack of cookies, just to scare us,” says Shyamen.

Power in the neighborhoods
The power outage is mainly in the Braakhuizen and Coevering districts, leaving almost half of Geldrop without power. Technicians are on their way to resolve the fault. “Sorry for the inconvenience!”, says grid operator Enexis.
