Messages in Ukrainian are distributed on a large screen, calling on people who already have a reception address to register only administratively and to give up their place in the queue to people who have not yet found a place to sleep. Registration with the Immigration Department allows you to be assigned a place via Fedasil. The municipalities and private individuals have made some 20,000 places available for the reception.
Vulnerable persons, such as the sick, the elderly, people with disabilities or children, are given priority. The reception center will move to the Heysel early next week. This will allow the Immigration Department to work with forty counters, while only ten counters are available in Bordet.
People with Ukrainian nationality, or persons who have previously been granted asylum in Ukraine, can register. For the time being, this is not yet possible for people who only had a temporary residence permit in Ukraine, such as students. “Lawyers are looking into the case,” says Ernould. “That category of people did not belong to the target group for which the European Temporary Protection Directive provides, but it is clear that – given the dramatic circumstances – we are trying to see to what extent we could possibly also accommodate these people,” it sounds.
