Customs seized nearly 10 million illegal cigarettes on Wednesday. Customs officers discovered the load in a truck that had been pulled over a day earlier during a police check on the A58, near Wouw.
Because papers were missing from the load, agents alerted customs, who discovered the cigarettes. If the cargo had been sold on the Dutch market, the government would have missed 2.4 million in excise duty, according to customs on Thursday. The cargo is destroyed.
