The official funeral service for Uwe Seeler next Wednesday will take place in the 57,000-seat Hamburger Volksparkstadion, HSV’s home ground, as Seeler is said to have wished. The NDR (1.30 p.m. to 3.30 p.m.) and the first (1.59 p.m. to 3 p.m.) broadcast the funeral service for the HSV idol.

The memorial event in the Volkspark is open to the public, and the stadium gates open at 1 p.m. The stadium guests are asked to refrain from floral decorations in favor of a donation for the Uwe-Seeler-Foundation. According to the Senate of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, the funeral service was prepared in close consultation with the family and with the participation of HSV and the German Football Association (DFB).

Among the around a thousand invited guests at the funeral service are, among others, Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Peter Tschentscher (both SPD), Scholz’s successor as the first mayor of the Hanseatic city.

Chancellor Scholz had announced his participation in the funeral service for “Us Uwe” on Wednesday through a government spokesman. “With Uwe Seeler, not only has a great footballer left us, but also a great person,” said Olaf Scholz about the death of the football legend.
