While the German hockey women were already able to celebrate their European indoor title, the men had to tremble for a place in the final. After the 9:1 against the Czech Republic, however, there was the hoped-for support. Opponent in the final is Austria.
The German national hockey teams can hope for their first double triumph since 2012 in Leipzig at the European Indoor Championships in Hamburg after the women’s team won the 16th title. After the hosts’ 5:4 (1:2) success in the final against arch-rivals Netherlands, the men, as defending champions, also made it into the final on Sunday (2 p.m.) despite their first defeat (6:7 against Austria). When reaching for his 17th European Championship success, the team around record national player Tobias Hauke meets world champion and preliminary round winner Austria.
Niklas Bruns was already optimistic after the 9:1 in the final preliminary round match against the Czech Republic. “That should actually be enough. Everything else is beyond the realm of reality. I’m definitely super hot to play here tomorrow in front of a full house. Even if it’s just the game for third place – I don’t think so,” he said said to the NDR. And he was right. After that, the Netherlands couldn’t get beyond a 7:4 against Austria.
Ultimately, the team of U21 coach Rein van Eijk, who represents national coach Andre Henning at the Elbe, advanced to the final behind Austria and ahead of the Netherlands, who were tied on points, because of the better goal difference. Niklas Bruns and Luis Holste each played a key part in the necessary victory against the Czech Republic with a brace.
