Luka Doncic is one of the NBA’s biggest superstars. The Slovenian basketball player from the Dallas Mavericks now has a mega contract with an unbelievable record salary.
As “ESPN” reports, Doncic is about to sign an extension with the Dallas Mavericks. The 24-year-old is expected to sign a so-called supermax contract with the Mavs. This allows players who meet certain criteria to earn up to 35 percent of the salary cap.
In five years, Doncic is expected to collect $318 million (approx. 298 million euros). This would make the Slovenian the highest-paid player in the NBA.
Jaylen Brown, previous NBA record holder
Just in July, Jaylen Brown signed a five-year contract worth $304 million (approx. €295 million) with the Boston Celtics, setting the record for the highest contract in basketball history.
Since Doncic has only been playing in the NBA for six years, he shouldn’t actually sign such an extension. However, if the point guard is elected to the All-NBA first team, he would have been an All-NBA player in two of the previous three seasons and would still meet the requirements. This would allow him to sign a contract extension in 2025, which would be valid from the 2026/27 season.
While Doncic delivered last NBA season and was elected to the All-NBA team, he was unable to fully impress at the Basketball World Cup in the Philippines, Japan and Indonesia. The Slovenian was the figurehead at the tournament in the absence of numerous other basketball stars. However, the co-favorites disappointed with seventh place.
In the 89:100 win against Canada in the quarterfinals, the leader of the Slovenians was also sent off because he received two technical fouls. The most significant success for Doncic remains the 2017 European Championship title, in which the now 24-year-old did not yet play the dominant role as he does now.
