Nature photographer Machiel de Vos (88) from Havelte passed away

In the same region, near the Havelterberg, he also made a special discovery in August 2012. Here he took a photo of the Emperor’s Mantle, a rare butterfly that does not originally occur in Drenthe. The animal has now been spotted more often in our country and the butterfly has officially returned since 2015.

In August last year, RTV Drenthe went out with Machiel de Vos in his mission to immortalize all the pigeon houses in the Netherlands. Photographing pigeon houses started as a hobby, but became much more than that for De Vos. “It has become a mission. Because I would like to show what can still be seen in the Netherlands of the cultural history of the pigeon houses. I feel fortunate that I can still do this because the years will count,” he said last year. .

Machiel de Vos died on February 12, 2024 at the age of 88.
