Naturalist Jan van Ginkel (68) passed away

Naturalist Jan van Ginkel (68) passed away this week in his hometown of Orvelte.

Van Ginkel became known for his passion and passion for nature in Drenthe. In addition to being a researcher, he tried to share his love for nature with others as a writer and teacher. Van Ginkel went on many walking tours and subsequently wrote numerous books and stories about them.

Van Ginkel also gained fame as Waggle Jan, who worked on behalf of the Drentse Jeneverbesgilde for the preservation of the juniper. This guild still ensures that young juniper bushes are replanted in sand drifts of nature areas.

In December, Van Ginkel received the Harry de Vroome medal for his proven commitment and passion for nature. It is a biennial award, but an exception was made for Van Ginkel, who was already ill at the time.
