NATO sends reinforcements to Eastern Europe | Abroad

Russia has gathered many soldiers along the Ukrainian border and is preparing for an attack, according to the United States. Ukraine is not a NATO member, but the military alliance says it will not accept an attack on the country. In that case, western countries will declare heavy sanctions against Russia. The Netherlands previously announced that it would send two F-35s to Bulgaria and has an amphibious transport ship, with landing craft and helicopters, and two land units ready. Furthermore, France sends reinforcements to Romania and Denmark to Lithuania and the Baltic Sea.

Stoltenberg “welcomes the additional troops contributed by the allies.” NATO will “continue to take all measures necessary to protect and defend all allies, including by strengthening the eastern part of the alliance.”

The NATO chief points out that NATO first stationed troops in Poland and the Baltic states after Russia’s annexation of Ukraine’s Crimean peninsula. They had to “make it clear that an attack on one ally is considered an attack on the entire alliance.”
