NATO meets on Thursday morning for emergency deliberations | Abroad

NATO ambassadors from all 30 member states are meeting at headquarters in Brussels. Stoltenberg will hold a press conference afterwards. The NATO boss already issued a first statement last night, strongly condemning the ‘reckless and unprovoked attack’.

“Despite our repeated warnings and tireless diplomatic efforts, Russia has chosen the path of aggression against a sovereign and independent country,” Stoltenberg said. “This is a serious violation of international law and a serious threat to Euro-Atlantic security.”

The alliance calls on Russia to immediately stop military action and respect Ukraine’s borders. NATO has already ramped up its presence in the eastern member states. Ukraine is not a member of NATO, which is why the alliance does not want to intervene militarily. However, several Member States have made defensive means available.
