NATO chief: war in Ukraine could last for years

The war in Ukraine could last for years, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg told the German newspaper Bild am Sonntag. According to him, the supply of modern weapons to Ukrainian troops increases the chance that the eastern Ukraine’s Donbas region will be liberated from Russian occupation.

“We must prepare for the fact that it can take years. We must not give up Ukraine,” Stoltenberg told Bild on Sunday. “Even though the costs are high, not only for military support, but also due to rising energy and food prices.”

A new aid package for Ukraine will be discussed at a NATO summit in Madrid later this month. That should help the country transition from old Soviet-era weapons to modern Western weaponry, Stoltenberg said earlier this week.
