Nations League: 0-1 v Croatia – France next bottom

World champions France lost at home to Croatia in the Nations League and will miss the final tournament. Denmark beat Austria.

Croatia went 1-0 (1-0), midfield star Luka Modric scored the decisive goal in Paris in the fifth minute with a penalty kick. Ibrahima Konaté had previously stepped on the heel of a Croatian in the penalty area. World champion France remains without a win and is bottom of the group, Croatia is second.

France, who started the tournament as the defending champions, no longer have a chance of reaching the final tournament of the Nations League.

Sovereign victory for Denmark against Austria

Denmark beat Austria 2-0 (2-0) in the other game of the group. Austria’s coach Ralf Rangnick had to accept his second defeat in his fourth game. Wolfsburg striker Jonas Wind (21st minute) and Andreas Skov Olsen (37th) scored the goals in Copenhagen.

The Danes dominated the game from the start, the ÖFB selection hardly had any chances. Shortly before the end, substitute Christian Eriksen (88th) almost made it 3-0. But his shot hit the post.

Denmark still top of the table

After the third win in the fourth group game, Denmark continues to lead the Nations League Group 1, Austria is third with four points. The four group winners of League A will play the final tournament of the Nations League from June 14th to 18th, 2023. The two final group match days are scheduled for September.

The final tournament will be held in either the Netherlands, Belgium, Poland or Wales. UEFA will decide on the tournament host in January 2023.

Draw between Iceland and Israel

Other games on Monday night were played in leagues B and C. In group C3, Kazakhstan won 2-1 (2-0) against Slovakia, Azerbaijan defeated Belarus 2-0 (0-0).

In group B2, Iceland and Israel drew 2:2 (1:1), the second game between Russia and Albania was cancelled, the Russian team was suspended by UEFA because of Russia’s aggressive war against Ukraine.
