National team | “Unavoidable”: DFB parts ways with Hansi Flick

One day after the embarrassing bankruptcy against Japan, the German Football Association made a decision and released Hansi Flick. An interim solution for the upcoming international match was also announced.

The German Football Association separates from national coach Hansi Flick.

The expulsion is a first in the 123-year history of the German Football Association. None of Flick’s ten predecessors were fired by the association. The 58-year-old took over after the European Championships in the summer of 2021, and the former successful FC Bayern coach only won twelve games in 25 competitive games. A low point was undoubtedly the early elimination from the World Cup in Qatar, the most recent was the 4-1 defeat against Japan.

DFB President Bernd Neuendorf explained: “The committees agreed that the men’s senior national team needs new impetus after the recent disappointing results. We need a spirit of optimism and confidence with a view to the European Championship in our own country. For me personally “It was one of the most difficult decisions of my time in office so far. Because I value Hansi Flick and his assistant coaches as football experts and people. But sporting success is the top priority for the DFB. Therefore the decision was unavoidable.”

Interim trio against France – who will be the permanent solution?

Rudi Völler, who was recently appointed sports director, will be in charge of the DFB selection for the game against France (Tuesday, 9:00 p.m.). Hannes Wolf and Sandro Wagner will work alongside him on an interim basis.

The 63-year-old justified the step: “Hansi Flick has worn himself out over the past few months, he and his coaching team have given everything to turn things around for the better after being eliminated from the World Cup in Qatar. Unfortunately, we have to realize today that “We didn’t succeed. The game in Japan clearly showed us that we can’t get any further in this constellation. It’s not an easy moment for me, because I joined the DFB in February to support Hansi Flick with all my possibilities “To keep his back free so that he can be successful in sport.”

It is not yet clear who will look after the German national team in the long term. According to “Bild”, Julian Nagelsmann, who once inherited Hansi Flick from FC Bayern, is the favorite for the post as national coach.

The 36-year-old coach was fired from FC Bayern last March and replaced by Thomas Tuchel. Since his contract in Munich is still valid until 2026, Nagelsmann would probably also be an expensive solution, since the German record champions are entitled to a transfer fee. FC Bayern once signed Nagelsmann from RB Leipzig for a world record transfer fee of 25 million euros.
