National team: Thomas Müller from Bayern Munich

Thomas Müller from FC Bayern is returning to the national soccer team after nine months. The 33-year-old replaces BVB striker Niclas Füllkrug, who has to miss the upcoming friendlies against Japan (September 9th) and France (September 12th) due to injury. The DFB confirmed this on Monday.

Müller had played the last of his 121 international matches at the WN 2022 in Qatar. After the inglorious end of the DFB team in the preliminary round, the veteran was not called up for the time being.

Müller was recently surprisingly relaxed about this fact: “I have a very good exchange with Hansi Flick. We get along very well in sport and privately. I’m ready for all crimes. I’ll be in every team and in every role give everything. Let’s see what happens in the next few months,” said the offensive player, who added very clearly: “But German football doesn’t depend on my personal details now. I’m ready when it matters, when I’m asked – otherwise look let’s look at that now.”

At the time, Müller had no idea that he would actually be asked a little later.

The DFB also announced that Füllkrug would join the squad “as planned”, but due to “a slight strain on a tendon” the attacker “may not be available for the two games in Wolfsburg and Dortmund”.
