The planned comeback of goalkeeper Almuth Schult in the national team of German soccer players has burst.
The 31-year-old from VfL Wolfsburg had to leave on Sunday because of shoulder problems, as the DFB announced. Schult was originally supposed to be between the posts in the selection of national coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg for the first time in almost three years for the World Cup qualifier on Tuesday (4:00 p.m.) in Stara Pazova against Serbia.
Schult played her last international match on June 29, 2019 in the World Cup defeat against Sweden. She then underwent shoulder surgery and gave birth to twins in April 2020.
Most recently she was in the German squad, but was absent from the Arnold Clark Cup in England in February due to corona quarantine. In the 3-0 win against Portugal in Bielefeld on Saturday, Frankfurt’s Merle Frohms, who is considered the regular keeper, kept the goal.
It was announced last week that Schult would move to Angels City FC in California after the European Championships in England in July. The club is owned by women. Actress Natalie Portman is one of the founders.
Lattwein, Rauch and Bühl are also leaving
In addition, Lena Lattwein and Felicitas Rauch from VfL Wolfsburg and Klara Bühl from FC Bayern Munich left the DFB selection prematurely. According to the association, this was already agreed before the Portugal game. Rauch and Bühl each scored a goal.
Lattwein accompanied the selection of national coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg despite muscular problems and completed treatments and light training sessions there.
In return, the two Bayern soccer players Maximiliane Rall and Linda Dallmann, who only sat in the stands in Bielefeld, are back in the squad against Serbia.
The duo had traveled there because they had previously had a positive corona test. FC Bayern and VfL Wolfsburg meet in the DFB Cup semifinals on Easter Sunday.
