National Remembrance Day 2022 in Zoetermeer: ​​this is the program

On Wednesday 4 May, the Netherlands commemorates all civilians and military personnel who have died in the Kingdom of the Netherlands or elsewhere in the world since the outbreak of the Second World War, in war situations and during peace missions. In Zoetermeer there is a special program that you can participate in.

On May 4, there is traditionally the silent tour through the Dorpsstraat and the memorial service at the War Memorial in the Wilhelmina Park. Afterwards you can visit a free theater performance by young people from Zoetermeer in the Stadstheater. Read the full program below:

Silent tour in the Dorpsstraat

On Wednesday evening, May 4, the silent tour will start at 19.25. The starting point is Nicolaaspark at Dorpsstraat 24. Together with mayor Michel Bezuijen, drummers of the Kunst en Vriendschap music association and members of the scouting group John McCormick, members of the Contact Oud Mariniers and an envoy from the American embassy, ​​you can walk along. Memorial service

The silent tour ends at the Wilhelmina Park. Here is the War Memorial where the memorial service starts at 8pm. This begins with a two-minute silence, after which wreaths and flowers are laid at the monument. Then the mayor gives a speech. A student from group 7 or 8 of IKC de Springplank reads the winning poem of the National Committee 4 and 5 May. Afterwards there is a possibility to walk along the monument and possibly to lay flowers yourself.

And then to the theater

On May 4 at 9 p.m., more than a hundred performances related to the Second World War will be played throughout the Netherlands. This year the City Theater Zoetermeer is participating for the first time in this youth project. Thirteen young people from Zoetermeer spoke to eyewitnesses and did research into how the war in Zoetermeer. These stories have been combined into a performance that they will play together on May 4.

commemoration trip

On Tuesday 3 May you can sail with the Meervaarder for an interesting commemoration trip. The Jolly Duck plane crashed in the Geerpolder in 1945. The boat trip heads towards that spot while narrator Laurens de Groot tells the story of gunner John McCormick. He and other crew committed himself to the liberation of Zoetermeer. Unfortunately, they all did not survive this accident.

The memorial services are on Tuesday 3 May at 1:00 PM and 3:00 PM. The trip takes about an hour and tickets cost 8 euros per person and 3.30 euros for children up to 13 years. order them here
