National player Laura Freigang with a clear demand on the DFB

National player Laura Freigang called for more equality shortly before the presidential election at the German Football Association.

“I would like the future DFB president to take full advantage of women’s football and to promote it. Other countries are showing the way,” said the 24-year-old to the news portal “watson”.

“We’re really not asking for any utopian things,” said Freigang, adding that professional footballers “are not doing badly either”. The striker from Eintracht Frankfurt is “not just about the elite, but about popular sport. It’s time to finally ensure equality. Also when it comes to promoting young people and popular sport.” The DFB should “not only promote what brings profit”.

The fact that the players in the clubs could not earn the same as their male colleagues was “only logical” because the clubs had to refinance themselves. “It would be possible in the national team,” stressed Freigang, adding: “If the DFB doesn’t want to send this signal, then that’s the way it is.” The debate is “not just about money,” but it “would be a striking sign that we are really being taken as seriously as the men.”
